According to this Wikipedia article , the hookah was invented around 800 AD in Baghdad, Iraq.  About 750 years later, the water filtration part of the devise was introduced by Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani in India.  Since its invention, the hookah as been a status symbol in India and a social device in the Arab world.
