One of our Egyptian neighbors smoking his hookah and contemplating on the fact that the water in the bowl filters out a large percentage of unclean pieces of tobacco and tar had a brainstorm :
“Why ,the vast majority of smokers today put a plastic mouthpiece on their hookah hoses to make them hygenic from previous users, lets go one step further and make a plastic mouthpiece that also filters any unwanted substances from the hose, such as tobacco flakes &fumes.”
This would also add to the security of the most sensitive smoker!
But how to filter? Many home water filter systems use charcoal to pass the water through and cleanse it, air systems too, why I remember 45 years ago finding a “Lark” brand cigarette and after smoking I tore apart to see it’s celebrated charcoal filter supposedly the cleanest cigarette smoke.
Basically at the Egyptian factory he has made a good sturdy filter that acts also as a mouthpiece, can be used 20 or so times. Inside you will find 2 super-thin mesh screens, a charcoal chamber enclothed in a plastic cartridge so each puff is actually 3 times filtered.

As I write, I’m smoking the new ultra-modern “Unit 2.0″ hookah from Austria.
Its a 19 inch high juniour size hookah that assembled out of the carton in a minute.
Pieces :
One large size bowl flat on the bottom “v” shaped; glass made in Germany. The aluminum shaft and its base fit perfectly into the already built in 4 waffered rubber grommets, its an air tight fit.
The aluminum shaft is a cinch to clean, it has 11 circular air vents which dissipate heat. There is a hollow portion at the top of the shaft for shisha with lots of room , then add your foil.
Generally on all my hookahs I use one and a half or two coals, and still I need a few puffs to get the smoke going. I was suprised on the first puff with only one coal covered by the added on thick aluminum wind cover 4 inches high to get a gigantic cloud of smoke!
And the taste of the shisha comes out very strong and true.

I still can’t believe that I am writing this! I am about to go public and recommend a herbal shisha.
I’ve had 3 other brand companies of herbal shisha and felt as if I was smoking through a condom, none of the taste that I have experienced in my 8 1/2 years smoking hookah.
I also missed the nicotine kick, even though you won’t find more than 0.5% tobacco in any shisha mix. Funny tasting herbals with no clout.
Which is why I have done the former un-thinkable from my past. I’ve gone and smoked all the 4 packs of “El Rosha” herbal shisha that was given to me. I just filled the last bowl and am going to smoke it soon.
What’s more, I am going to place an order for more “El Rosha”!! It’s that good.
Upon opening the pack you see first the juicy shisha and get hit with a very strong fragrance , but not a chemical smell, its quite enjoyable. “El Rosha” packs in the bowl very easily with nothing sticking to the fingers but make sure as in all shisha you don’t pack it down, leave air space or it will overheat and burn. (THE general rule of all shisha).
“El Rosha” in Arabic means “The Chieftain” which would be the title of the head of a tribe or yet bigger. And the name fits.

Hookah production since the first one was made out of a coconut and a straw in Asia has constantly been refined. They went on to glass, metal. Seeing the market change these last 9 years the ammount of progress in all sections of the hookah market, its no wonder with millions of people smoking hookah and millions who won’t since they don’t touch tobacco the shisha producers would work hard to get out a great product. In the past they failed, but with “El Rosha” herbal shisha it seems that non-nicotine smokers will enjoy their flavours as much as this regular tobacco smoker does!

Wow, this stuff is good. I usually stick with Al Fakher because it’s not too cheap and not too expensive, assuming there couldn’t be too much of a difference between this and, say, Starbuzz.
But there is a noticable difference. Starbuzz is a bit more expensive, but it’s also a bit higher quality.
The flavor of Starbuzz Pomegranate shisha is just sweet enough, without a hint of harshness. This is the sort of shisha you could smoke for hours and never feel like it’s wearing on your lunges or taste buds.
Incidentally I don’t have any pictures of the Starbuzz shisha itself, since I was smoking it at a hookah bar (King Tut’s — Tempe, AZ)… here’s what I do have though:

I thought that Starbuzz is all hype in light of there Budweiser-esque posters, but it turns out that the extra cost really is worth it.

In case you’re at a public hookah bar and you’d prefer not to smoke from exactly the same mouthpiece as hundreds of other people, then you might consider getting a few hookah condoms. These are usually called “mouthpiece tips” or “mouth tips,” but “hookah condom is so much more memorable don’t you think? It’s appropriate in light of their similar purposes.
Your hookah condom should create an air-tight seal so prevent any air-leakage. Many hookah bars these day provide this handy little accessory free of charge. For example. The mouth tip you see below was provided free of charge with a standard hookah from King Tut’s Cafe (Tempe, AZ). Good customer service move.
